يوجد العديد من أنواع الأسهم في البورصة، مثل (الأسهم العادية، والمجانية، والممتازة، وأسهم الخزينة، والمقيدة، وغير المقيدة)، ويمكن التمييز بين كل هذه الأنواع في البورصة كما يلي:

- الأسهم العادية: هي صكوك ملكية تعد بمثابة حق في ملكية الشركة، وتعطي لحاملها الحق في حضور الجمعية العامة السنوية للشركة، والحصول على توزيعات إذا ما حققت الشركة أرباحا.

- الأسهم المجانية: وهي التي توزع على المساهمين بنسبة امتلاكهم للأسهم العادية، وتعد الأسهم المجانية بمثابة زيادة في رأس مال الشركة، والمتولدة عن احتجاز أجزاء من أرباح الشركة؛ وبالتالي يكون للمساهمين الحق في هذه الزيادة في رأس المال.

- الأسهم الممتازة: وهي التي تمنح لمالكها حقوقا إضافية لا يتمتع بها صاحب السهم العادي، مثل أن يحصل مالكها على أسبقية عن حملة الأسهم العادية في الحصول على نسبة من أرباح الشركة، كما أن مالكها يتمتع بأولوية في الحصول على حقوقه عند تصفية الشركة قبل حامل الأسهم العادية، وبعد حملة السندات.

- أسهم الخزينة: هي الأسهم التي تقوم الشركة المصدّرة بإعادة شرائها من السوق عن طريق بورصة الأوراق المالية، وأسهم الخزينة لا يحق لها توزيعات أو حق التصويت خلال فترة ملكية الشركة لها.

- الأسهم المقيدة: والقيد عبارة عن تسجيل وتصنيف السهم في البورصات سواء المحلية أو العالمية، وذلك من خلال إجراءات خاصة بعملية القيد، وذلك حتى يتسنى للبورصة إعطاء ذوي الحقوق حقوقهم من عملية القيد هذه.

-الأسهم غير المقيدة: هي التي تكون غير مسجلة سواء بالبورصة المحلية أو بالبورصات العالمية.

-كوبون السهم: وهو الذي يمثل العائد على السهم، وهذا يعد بمثابة الربح الذي جناه السهم من استثماره في الشركة.

وعلى العكس من هذا لا يوجد عدد كبير بالعديد من أنواع السندات، ويجب هنا التفرقة بين السندات التي يصدرها القطاع الخاص وشركاته والسندات الحكومية؛ حيث يعد الأول بمثابة قرض للاستثمار يضمنه المركز المالي للشركة، والثاني يعد قرضا بهدف الإنفاق العام وتضمنه الحكومة.

- سندات تصدرها منشآت الأعمال:

تعد السندات التي تصدرها منشآت الأعمال بمثابة عقد أو اتفاق بين المنشأة (المقترض) والمستثمر (المقرض). وبمقتضى هذا الاتفاق يقرض الطرف الثاني مبلغا معينا إلى الطرف الأول الذي يتعهد بدوره برد أصل المبلغ وفوائد متفق عليها في تواريخ محددة. وقد ينطوي العقد على شروط أخرى لصالح المقرض، مثل رهن بعض الأصول الثابتة ضمانا للسداد أو وضع قيود على إصدار سندات أخرى في تاريخ لاحق. كما قد يتضمن العقد شروطا لصالح المقترض، مثل حق استدعاء السندات قبل تاريخ الاستحقاق.

سندات حكومية:

يقصد بالسندات الحكومية صكوك المديونية متوسطة وطويلة الأجل التي تصدرها الحكومة بهدف الحصول على موارد إضافية لتغطية العجز في موازنتها أو بهدف مواجهة التضخم.

وينظر المستثمر إلى الأوراق المالية التي تصدرها الحكومة على أنها أكثر جاذبية؛ إذ عادة ما يتمتع عائدها بالإعفاء الضريبي، وهو ما يندر أن يتحقق للأوراق المالية الأخرى. يضاف إلى ذلك تضاؤل مخاطر التوقف عن السداد أو مخاطر تأجيله. فالحكومة المركزية يمكنها زيادة مواردها المالية لمواجهة خدمة الدين عن طريق إصدار المزيد من أوراق البنكنوت أو عن طريق فرض ضرائب جديدة إذا ما اضطرت لذلك.

وعادة ما تنشر الصحف في الدولة المعنية معلومات عن تلك الأوراق، مثل تاريخ الاستحقاق، ومعدل الكوبون، والتغير في سعر الشراء عما كانت عليه في اليوم السابق، والعائد الذي يمكن أن يحققه المستثمر.
